The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association celebrates third annual BeGrainSafe Week

Winnipeg, MB, August 9, 2023 – The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) is raising awareness about the importance of grain safety with the third annual BeGrainSafe Week, August 14-20, 2023.

CASA’s BeGrainSafe program, launched in 2017 in response to increased grain entrapment fatalities, works to heighten awareness and provide training regarding the hazards associated with grain. According to Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting data, there were 27 fatalities due to asphyxiation from grain or soil on Canadian farms between 2011 and 2020.

“One of the main points that we highlight with the BeGrainSafe program is that grain entrapment can happen to anyone in just a matter of seconds,” says Andrea Lear, CASA’s Chief Executive Officer. “Unfortunately, grain entrapments often have tragic outcomes, which is why preventing them is so important. BeGrainSafe Week allows us to further spread the message about grain safety to help keep everyone safe on Canadian farms.”

In support of this year’s BeGrainSafe Week, CASA has developed resources, including social media posts, public service announcements, and safety advice articles, with tips and information on how to be safe around grain.

Long-time farm safety champion G3 is the presenting sponsor of this year’s BeGrainSafe Week and has been a key supporter of the BeGrainSafe program for many years.

“Safety is a top priority in all our workplaces, and we’re also committed to enhancing safety in farming communities,” says G3 CEO Don Chapman. “G3 is a top sponsor of CASA’s BeGrainSafe program, and since 2016 has made grain rescue training and equipment available to dozens of fire departments across Western Canada, Ontario and Quebec. We’re proud to be a Safety Champion and sponsor of this year’s BeGrainSafe Week.”

The BeGrainSafe webpage includes resources for both the general public and media. All resources, stories and infographics are available to print and share to help raise awareness about grain safety. For more information, visit casa-acsa.ca/BeGrainSafe.
